Snowdon and other popular mountains in North Wales have been closed off to the general public as the park authority tightens measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Cader Idris, Y Garn, Glyderau, Tryfan, Cwm Idwal, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy are also shut off after images of large numbers of visitors flocking to Snowdonia attracted criticism over the weekend.

Mountain rescuers have also been called out on several occasions, leading to calls for people to act responsibly.

The national park has now announced there will be no access to the mountains until further notice, with all main car parks, information and warden centres closed as well.

The park authority said: “In light of the current situation with Covid-19 and in line with government guidelines, we are in the process of making adaptations to our services.

“Our priority in these difficult times is the health of our staff and volunteers and looking after the communities and business in and around the National Park.

“We are closing the busiest mountains in Snowdonia, and there will be no access to these mountains until further notice.

“Our wardens will remain at work but will have limited social contact.

“Their main focus will be reacting to any issues relating to visitor management (e.g. parking, litter etc) and managing contractors.

“We are also working with other agencies to look at options of how we can deploy our wardens service to help local communities.”
