Calls have been made for stronger action from the Welsh Government and local councils to address the nuisance caused by seagulls in North Wales.

It follows a Senedd Member detailing the numerous complaints he receives from constituents each year about the birds.

With the seagull population having migrated into residential areas during the Covid-19 pandemic, Clwyd West MS Darren Millar said the problem appeared to be worse than ever this year.

It has resulted in him being inundated with emails and calls from resident’s desperate for something to be done to tackle the problem.

He said: “Seagulls are a protected species but they can also be a great nuisance when they nest in residential areas.

“They are noisy, their droppings make a huge mess, and they can be very aggressive, especially while rearing their chicks.

“Neither the Welsh Government or local authorities seem to want to take action to prevent the rise in the urban gull population and this is causing a huge deal of aggravation and conflict.

“No one wants to see wild animals harmed but we do need to ensure that litter bins are gull proof and that those who feed seagulls and entice them into residential areas are dealt with.

“Everyone expects some gulls beside the seaside and, in fact, they’re a charming part of what the seaside has to offer, however, over the years populations have become too large and they are now a real menace.

“It’s therefore high time that both the Welsh Government and local authorities took some firm action to put an end to the problems they are causing for both residents and visitors alike.”
