Police have described the number of drug driving offences committed during the coronavirus lockdown as “extremely concerning”.

Two men were picked up by officers in different parts of North Wales last night after testing positive for illegal substances whilst behind the wheel.

Shortly after 6.30pm, a 28-year-old man was arrested in Caernarfon after testing positive for cannabis.

It was also discovered that he didn’t have a licence or insurance either.

Police said he would be dealt with for the latter offence first and has been released under investigation while they await further drugs test results.

Later at around 7.30pm, a 43-year-old man was stopped on the A55 at Llanfairfechan where he tested positive for both cannabis and cocaine. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Members of the roads policing unit said: “It is extremely concerning to see a number of drivers who are putting themselves and others in danger.

“The continued focus on road safety is particularly important during the current pandemic when we all need to do what we can to reduce the pressure on the NHS to save lives.”
