More Gwynedd primary schools are now rated in the best “green” category, according to the Welsh Government’s latest categorisation ratings.
The system was launched by the Welsh Government in 2014 in a bid to drive up performance, following criticism that the scrapping of league tables had led to school standards falling.
But publication of the latest results have seen 49 of the county’s primary schools rated as needing the “least support” – compared to 44 in January 2019.
However, the news was not as positive in the secondary sector with three of the county’s schools now requiring the most intensive support.
The four categories are ‘green’, ‘yellow, ‘amber’ and ‘red’.
As a result, schools rated ‘green’ are already doing well and are deemed to be in need of the least support while schools in the ‘red’ category are those needing most support, with each ranking triggering a different support package – ranging from four to 25 days.
The data is based on several factors including  assessment and exam results, attendance and leadership and assessment by school improvement consortia.
But commenting on the publication of today’s results, Cabinet Secretary for Education Kirsty Williams conceded that the future of the system is under review.
Speaking of the Wales-wide results which saw the percentage of primary and secondary schools in the green category rise from 41.6% in 2018 to 46.9% in 2019, she said:  ” This tells a story of improvement and increased capacity in the system that should be recognised. These schools will have a key role to play in supporting others, sharing their expertise, skills and good practice.
“The outcome of this year’s categorisation process is a strong indicator that, through the work of regional consortia, we are building capacity and ensuring schools are given the right support at the right time to enable them to raise standards for all.
“Despite the improvements, I remain concerned about those schools, particularly the proportion in the secondary sector, which continue to require the highest levels of support.
“The figures published today show that 13.5% of our schools are in the amber and red support categories.
“The issues behind these schools are often complex and these cases are likely to require strong partnerships across the middle tier. We are therefore trialling a multi-agency approach with a small number of secondary schools.
“This approach will mean that once local authorities and regions have identified those schools that need the most support, they are able to draw on the considerable expertise and resources that exist across our middle tier, with everyone aligned and working towards the same goal.
“In assessing the effectiveness of these new arrangements, we will also consider the future of categorisation.”
