Dwygyfylchi beach boardwalk gets the green light
Dwygyfylchi beach will soon be accessible to parents with small children and those with disabilities.
Conwy County Council has agreed to contribute £25,300 to build a timber boardwalk to the beach together with picnic tables.
A grant has also been secured from Welsh Government for £91,700 towards the 200m long boardwalk.
Currently beach erosion has meant access is restricted, especially to prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs, but the new boardwalk will include ramps and is scheduled to be complete by March 2022.
Cabinet members approved the funding after councillors discussed how the boardwalk would improve access and open the beach up to residents whilst boosting tourism.
Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Anne McCaffrey was delighted with the decision.
“Dwygyfylchi beach is a wonderful natural beach well used over the years by villagers of all ages,” she said.
“There used to be a football pitch there, a youth hostel and a path through the sand dunes to take advantage of all that this beautiful beach has to offer; however, coastal erosion has been a significant issue. It’s taken its toll and has made beach access more and more difficult for many people, particular those with mobility difficulties.
“On behalf of villagers, I have worked hard with officers to bring this project forward. I am delighted that we have persuaded Welsh Government to invest over £90K in our beach.
“There is huge support from villagers for this project. All are delighted at the prospect of a boardwalk trail for villagers and for visitors too. The boardwalk will be a gateway to the beach and will give fantastic views across Liverpool Bay, Anglesey, Puffin Island and the Great Orme.”
She added: “We have a network of footpaths across our village. Our vision is to have this sea boardwalk as an addition to this network – the A55 huge interchange planned to be at junction 16a will enable a circular trail back to the village.”
